Issues With Weight Loss Following Pregnancy

By Trishia Serinton

All women gain weight during their pregnancies, it is unavoidable, of course. There is the weight of the baby itself inside of the pregnant mother, but also there is extra fat deposits in the abdominal area as well, which people sometimes call 'baby weight'. It can be quite difficult for most women to shed this extra weight after they have had the baby. For mothers who had some excess weight before they became pregnant, it can be harder for them to shed the baby weight as well.

In this article we shall take a brief look at some of the steps that can be adopted to lose weight after pregnancy.

1. Hydration is important`

To prevent dehydration after pregnancy, be sure that you consume a lot of liquids. The extra liquid that you consume will also contribute to a fuller feeling in the stomach, which also helps some to avoid eating too much food. Be sure to have lots of fluids, but don't have so many that it could be harmful, listen to your body.

2. Do not have overly strict diets

This may sound as surprising advice but trying to lose weight by following a strict diet can reduce the amount of nutrients that you passed down to your baby through breast milk. While this is not strictly proven, it must also be borne in mind that eating a healthy, nourishing diet is sufficient to allow for slow and natural weight loss rather than a rapid drop in weight. Eating lots of vegetables and fruits are great ways to relieve hunger and get plenty of vitamins, and having a more even and steady weight loss.

3. Exercise regularly

Plain old exercise is still quite effective. Aroebics and other cardiovascular and strengthening exercises will help burn calories and keep bones strong and muscle strength up. Exercises can include a brisk walk, jogging, swimming and cross-training. Mood is greatly affected by exercise as well, due to the release of endorphins. When the new mother uses exercise to lose weight, it has the added benefit of helping to reduce stress levels. It is essential that a doctor's advice on the sought before commencing any exercise program.

4. Keep breastfeeding your baby

Breastfeeding provides the infant with the essential nutrients and fats that are helpful in building up immunity and providing the necessary nutrition. The effects of breastfeeding on weight loss are debatable. Either way, weight loss should have no bearing on your decision to continue breastfeeding a baby.

5. Get plenty of rest

The body goes through plenty of changes during a pregnancy, and afterwards, taking care of a newborn can be stressful. Researchers have shown that losing weight from pregnancy is much easier if the mother is getting at least seven hours of sleep each night.

Summary

These methods that are time-tested and proven will help a new mother to shed the excess weight from a pregnancy in a healthy way.
